For the March 23, 2016 DC ANS dinner meeting, Dr. Robert Einziger, Senior Professional Staff member of the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, will be speaking on the following topic:
“Structure, Composition, and Behavior of High-Burnup Spent Nuclear Fuel”
Abstract.
Currently spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is being discharged from the reactor at burnups above 45 GWd/MTU. This SNF will have somewhat different physical characteristics than lower burnup fuel that was used for most performance studies for storage and transportation. In addition, it will be probably be stored for extended periods of time due to the postponement of the Yucca Mountain repository. This talk will give a brief description of the high burnup SNF and discuss the data needs to address safety issues of extended storage followed by transportation of the fuel. The DOE high burnup fuel research project at North Anna, the hydride reorientation studies at Argonne, fatigue studies at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and other national and international work on high burnup SNF will be described.
Biography
Robert Einziger Ph.D. in physics (Georgia Tech, RPI) is a member of the Senior Professional Staff of the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board where he deals with issues related to spent nuclear fuel and materials behavior. Previously he was a Senior Scientist in the NRC’s Division of Spent Fuel management, Manager of the Department of Materials Applications in Argonne National Laboratory’s Chemical Technology Division, and Manager of the Materials Application Section at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The majority of his research has dealt with the behavior of SNF during storage and transportation. He is a fellow of the ANS and has been awarded to Sam Tour award for corrosion science by the ASTM, and Mishima award for fuels research by the ANS.
