For the February DC ANS dinner meeting, Mr. Lenoid (Lenny) Mirkin of Bechtel will be speaking on the topic:
“Chernobyl Decommissioning”
In 1986, soldiers piled debris from the Chernobyl event using wheelbarrows and shovels onto the building remains. Afterwards, construction crews came and worked from May to November to construct a containment structure over the reactor’s remains called a sarcophagus (“the Chernobyl nuclear power plant object shelter”). Given the rush to finish in the worst of conditions, the sarcophagus seal eventually began failing. A new confinement structure has been designed to keep the plant’s damaged reactor secure for 100 years.
